As we crept further South so the Autumn began to creep further and further in, a patchwork of evergreen fir and burnt orange across the landscape. We travelled through pockets of warmth in the lower valleys and spent freezing nights high up amidst the peaks wrapped in blankets; there seemed to be no consistency to the weather in the Alps.⁣

Although it was a cloudy day the waters of Lac de Serre-Ponçon were still an impossibly deep blue, a colour that seemed to reflect onto the surrounding mountains. We wove in and out of its banks, travelling the lake’s entire 20km length twice as we passed towns and campsites in search of a place to swim.⁣

The deeper into the Alps we travelled, the more breathtaking the lakes seemed to get, with clearer waters and higher, more impressive surroundings; it was impossible to pick a favourite.⁣

But this one seemed to stand out, as we crossed the Pont de Sabine bridge soaring high above those sapphire waters in search of our own wild corner, the vastness of the lake seemed inconceivable to us. Having never swum in a lake larger than the size of a tennis court back in Cornwall, the deep deep waters of Lac de Serre-Ponçon both excited and terrified us at the same time.

Although this lake was just as man-made as the flooded quarries we’d dipped in before, it seemed that there were so many crooks and creeks where nature prevailed, and we could park up and strip off without seeing another soul all afternoon.⁣

You see, a journey for us is merely a series of detours, satisfying our intrigue and curiosities. It’s not about destination-hopping or iPhone-snapping, but a slow and visceral journey through the niches and forgotten areas of these lands, finding a personal connection in our own little corner of the world whether that be for a few hours or a few days at a time.
